Local artist Kirstin Steitz has started a podcast called Girls! Guns! & Comics! Her plan is to talk about comics from a girls perspective and to interview guests. She’s already set up an RSS feed so you can keep up with new episodes too.
In today’s podcast she interviews local comic artist Lady Darke, author and artist of the web comic Broken Glass. Lady Darke has made a special wallpaper of her character Misery just for the podcast audience.

The Daniel Boone Regional Library is offering a workshop titled Publish Your Own Book on Feburary 21st from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Calloway County Public Library in Fulton Missouri. Registration for the workshop begins Monday, February 4th.
From the website:
Publishing a book is no longer the expensive and time-consuming project it used to be. You can have a real, professionally printed book in your hands within 10 days, and you can order one or two copies at a time with no obligation to buy more. Publishing your recipes, poems, memories, family stories, even the history of your business, church, or club can be easy (and fun). We’ll explore “publish on demand” web sites and learn all about the process in this hands-on workshop.

Local illustrator Rob Davis and non-local writer Ron Fortier recently had the graphic novel Daughter of Dracula published. The book is available through Indyplanet.com for $10 + postage. Davis has some links to reviews of the book on his blog from December 2007. Comicon.com has an interview with Davis & Fortier about the book too.
From the website:
Vampire Daughter of Dracula meets, falls in love with, seduces, and then attempts to turn WWI flying ace “The Red Baron” into a vampire so the two of them may live forever together. When the Baron is shot down and killed Marya assumes the form of a giant bat-like creature, who with her giant flock of bats, begins wreaking havoc on the allied forces who killed her lover.
You can view more of Rob’s art and see what he’s up to on his blog.

Walt Disney will be brought back to life next Wednesday for a speaking engagement. On January 23rd at 6:30 pm, the Kansas City Public Library will host An Evening with Walt Disney. Local historian Dr. Bill Worley will play Disney in character, and probably will talk about Disney’s experiences in Kansas City. The event is free, but reservations are recommended. The event is in association with the interactive Once Upon a Time fairy tale exhibit on display at the central library.
By the way, did you know that we’ve had two local people write books about Disney over the years? Dan Viets wrote one in 1992 and Steven Watts also wrote one in 2001.

If you’re interested in sharpening your writing talent, you might want to check out the Columbia Chapter of the Missouri Writers Guild. They have monthly meetings that either features a speaker or small group critiques. They meet at the Orr St. Studios in Columbia, and their next meeting is Feburary 3rd, 2-4pm. (Same time as the midmococo meeting!)
A little further down the road towards St. Louis is the Coffee & Critique Writers Group that meets twice every Tuesday in St. Peters Missouri. They have an active blog that has writing tips, contests, submission opportunities, and other information to benefit writers. Also check out their sidebar links for more Missouri writers groups.

The Winter 2007 issue of The Missouri Review, University of Missouri’s literary magazine, is hot off the presses and features “Fluency in Form: A Survey of the Graphic Memoir” by Lisa Hoashi. The essay reviews many autobiographical comics such as Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, David B’s Epileptic, Craig Thompson’s Blankets, Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home and Marisa Acocella Marchetto’s Cancer Vixen.

It’s time again to feature another mid-Missouri comic creator and this time we have Zac Crockett up to bat. He’s been working hard this year churning out page after page of quality work that you can see on his deviantART page.
What are you working on now comics-wise?
I’m currently working on three different projects. I’m working on my webcomic “Opey the Warhead” (where I’m about to complete the second issue and then start on the third one), “Anyone but Virginia” (I’m working on the fourth issue of this 5 part story about a superheroine who attends her 10th year school reunion), and a comic strip “Pennies from Heaven” (about an orphan who meets up with a mysterious cat with strange powers).
How’s your comic output been this year? What’s helped or hindered your output?
My comic output last year was quite good, although doubts about the quality of my work seriously hampered, at times, my productivity. What’s helped me move forward in comics like “Opey the Warhead” is writing an outline and script of a given issue before drawing the comic and setting achievable goals for myself on a weekly basis.
