La Plata Pre-Con and Doc-Con

Posted by Winter on October 1, 2008

There’s a couple of different conventions happening soon in La Plata Missouri, the hometown of Doc Savage writer Lester Dent.

The first ever Pre-Con will be held October 10th. The event is a one day comic/sci-fi/gaming convention. Here’s more from the website:

There will be costume contests with cash prizes, ALL day screenings of Anime, Super Hero fare, and fan favorite films. Tabletop RPG sessions, comic books, special guests, panels, and more fun than you can shake your vorpal sword at! (assuming thats your idea of a good time…)

The 3rd Annual LaPlata Doc-Con will be held October 11th and 12th. This is a Doc Savage convention, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the character. From the announcement:

Attention Brothers in Bronze!  Make plans to attend the BIGGEST Doc Con yet!  This years LaPlata Doc Con will be held in the Silver Rails Event Center in LaPlata.  That means we will be centrally located for the event!  Vendors, TWO big screens, concessions, a stage, all within short walking distance of the Dent home, library, and the museum! This years guests include:

- Anthony Tollin, who of course needs no introduction to pulp fans. The man behind Nostalgia Ventures, veteran of DC Comics, OTR historian and the foremost authority on the Shadow
- Tom Roberts: Illustrator of Moonstone’s Doc Savage Radio Scripts book and artist extrordinaire!
- Other guests to be announced.

Besides our usual Doc fun (buying, selling, trading of pulps, comradarie, exclusive documentaries and films, etc.) we will be adding even MORE fun to the mix! Pulp character costume contest with prizes!  So come dressed as your favorite pulp hero, especially Doc and crew! Special Anniversary poster and program for all attendees!

Registration is $10 for any one or all days of the events.  Contact Wayne Judge if you wish to register. Dealers, artists and vendors can also contact him about setting up tables at the shows.
