Columbia Comic Book Convention

Posted by Winter on November 13, 2008

A Columbia Comic Book Convention is happening November 22nd from 10am to 4pm. The convention will be held at the Quality Inn at 1612 N. Providence Road and admission is free. Visit the promoter’s website to see the other mid-west conventions that he runs.

Here’s more info from a craigslist advertisement:

Hey Kids! Plans are in the making for the very first Comic Book convention to be held in Columbia in the 21st Century. You can find a wide assortment of comic books (both new and old) as well as related collectible items, such as action figures from dealers from 3 states. Plus if you have comics you no longer want dealers will be on hand to sell them to.

Update: The Missourian has a story about the upcoming convention.

Update two: Joe Myers had a table at the con, and there are some photos from the con in his forum. (Above photo was taken by me.)

Mizzou mascot spotlight

Posted by Winter on November 5, 2008

The Mizzou Wire blog has a story and slideshow about the MU cartoon mascots from over the years. There are many different versions of the tiger shown, including one shown at right drawn by Peanuts creator Charles Schulz for the 1956 homecoming edition of the Maneater. Schulz hid “Walker” in the credits of the illustration as a reference to his friend and cartoonist Mort Walker who attended Mizzou. Walker gives a little information in the story about how they both started out in the comics pages.
