Local comic creator Zac Crockett has just released a collection of the first three issues of everyone’s favorite pre-pubescent nuclear missile, Opey the Warhead.
From the description:
The collection features three issues and a bonus short story, detailing Opey’s various travails, including going to school for the first time, making friends despite his appearance and his first ever crush.
Opey the Warhead is the heartwarming story of a living nuclear warhead and his adventures at an elementary school set in the post-apocalypse.
It’s defiantly a unique and entertaining read and worth checking out. You can get your very own copy on demand from Indy Planet.

We’ve wanted to feature Emily Warren on the site for a while, but we didn’t catch her before she moved from Jeff City to Los Angeles last November. Recently she was kind enough to answer some questions from us, so we can still count her as a mid-Missourian creator for the moment, right?
A little background on Emily: She broke into the comics business after graduating from the Illinois Institute of Art in 2007 and making some connections at a Wizard World Chicago. She’s worked as a cover artist & colorist for several mainstream comics including Grimm Fairy Tales, Big Hero 6, X-men – First Class, and Secret Invasion. You can see more of her art at her Frozen Lilacs website.
What are you working on now comics-wise?
Right now I’m working on coloring the upcoming Cloak and Dagger mini, and a 3 issue one shot of Incredible Hercules.

This week Vox magazine has a story about the elements that make a superhero. As part of the online story, you can make your own superhero by selecting colors for their superhero called voxman.
The sidebar of the story tells about a comic being worked on by MU student Craig Dunn and friends Adam Neuman and Jeremy Hellwig. The unpublished comic is called Faces of Rushmore and they are shopping it around to potential publishers.

If your comic tastes tend to skew towards the children’s side of things, then you might want to check out this annual event in Warrensburg Missouri. The 41st Children’s Literature Festival is happening March 15-17th at the University of Central Missouri. While the festival seems mostly for kids, you can also register as an adult and get to see various professional authors and illustrators. Some illustrators are exhibiting their work at the library and giving talks there as well. Check the website for more details.
Speaking of children’s books, you might want to check out the work of local author/illustrator Deborah Zemke. She happens to have three books coming out this month! Check them out: More Pocket Poems, How to Win Friends and Influence Creatures, & Wishes for You.
