Benton drawing presentation

Posted by Winter on July 16, 2009

DBRLAs you may know, Thomas Hart Benton was once a cartoonist in Joplin Missouri before he hit it big as a fine artist. With that in mind, this program might be of some interest: Thomas Hart Benton’s Drawings and the Creative Process, July 28th at 7 p.m. at the Columbia Public Library Friends Room. More info from the website:

Dr. Joan Stack, curator of art collections at the State Historical Society of Missouri will present an illustrated lecture examining the drawings of famed Missouri artist Thomas Hart Benton. Stack will discuss Benton’s diverse approaches to drawing, with particular emphasis on the role of drawing in Benton’s creative process. Stack will also touch on “Oak Tree,” a Benton sketch recently acquired by the State Historical Society, and consider this drawing’s relationship to oak trees depicted in the painting “Persephone” and other works.
