Superhero event gets press

Posted by on October 31, 2010

The Be a Superhero for Columbia Public Schools event yesterday attracted roughly 760 people dressed as superheroes, which fell short of the world record of 1,580 people. The event was still successful, raising around $3,000 for the Columbia Public Schools Foundation.

There have been a lot of news stories surrounding the event. The Tribune seems to have several items about it, including a Friday editorial, a followup story and a slideshow. (They also covered another superhero related event that happened Wednesday.) For more coverage, there’s the Missourian, KOMU, and KRCG. The TV spot for the event is also online. You can check out our previous posts about the event for more information.

Mort Walker’s book signing

Posted by on October 23, 2010

MU alumnus Mort Walker, the creator of Beetle Bailey, stopped by to watch the new MU Student center dedication on Friday, and he also had a book signing for his latest book, Beetle Bailey: The Daily & Sunday Strips, 1965. Here’s some photos I took from the signing:

The MU bookstore was selling many things for Walker to sign.  In addition to his latest book, they were selling last year’s Sam’s Strip, Beetle Bailey statue prints, Shack hats, and various other collectables.

The Missourian has more photos from the events, and both the Tribune and Missourian have stories about the signing. KBIA also has a short audio interview with Walker.

Update: The Maneater has a story interviewing Walker as well.

Mort Walker appearing today at MU Student Center Dedication

Posted by on October 22, 2010

The new version of the Shack, now known as Mort’s Grill, is now temporarily open in the new MU Student Center on campus. According to the Tribune, Mort Walker will be there today for the dedication of the new student center at 3pm, and he will be doing a book signing at 5pm.

The Missourian reports that the first 1,600 students who drop by the student center between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. today will be able to grab a free Shackburger or pulled pork sandwich. They are also handing out Shack sauce that is based off of a recipe from the old Shack.

Updated (10/23/10): Contrary to what the Missourian article seemed to imply, the Mort’s Grill eatery is not open for everyday student use yet. They are still doing construction around the area, and one employee estimated that the work will be done mid-November. For this special event, a half finished version of the eatery was open for private donor events and to hand out free Shack burgers around lunch.

More details about superhero event

Posted by on October 12, 2010

The Be a Superhero for Columbia Public Schools event is coming soon. According to a Tribune article last week, the organizers not only have a new website, but also a new Guinness record to break of 1,580 people dressed in superhero costumes. The event starts at 11 a.m. on Oct. 30th at the Hickman High School football field, with the official count being taken at 12:15 p.m.

Ways to support the event:

  • Attend, in costume.
  • Be a sponsor.
  • Recruit others to attend (friends, co-workers, clubs, etc.).
  • Volunteer to help with planning or on the day of the event.

How to get a costume:

  • Make your own costume at Creative Days Art Studio. The studio will host costume creation sessions on Oct. 14th, Oct. 21st, and Oct. 28th from noon to 7 p.m. The studio will charge $7 an hour but will donate $5 of every admission to the schools foundation. Children and adults are both encouraged to attend.
  • Reserve or buy a costume at the Gotcha costume shop. They’ve ordered extra superhero costumes for the event, and you can donate your old superhero costumes to them as well.

Some more information is available on our previous blog post about the event.

24 Hour Comics Day is TOMORROW

Posted by on October 1, 2010

We are almost 24 hours away from start time of 24 Hour Comics Day!  I will be at Artlandish Gallery from 4-5 today to set-up; if you want to preview the layout of the area we will be in you’re more than welcome to come and help out during that time.  I will also be there at 11:00 tomorrow to make sure everything is in order.  It is highly recommended you arrive early to get situated before the 12:00 start time.  You can still participate if you arrive after 12 but it will hurt your chances of completing a full 24 page comic.  It is supposed to be rather chilly tomorrow so please dress comfortably.  Right now we’ve got 10 participants confirmed.  There’s still time to email me at testtubecomics@yahoo.com if you want to guarantee a spot, but we should have plenty of space for everyone.  There will be some local media covering the event as well.

Looking forward to another successful 24 Hour Comics Day Event!
