What a turnout we had at the last Midmococo meeting! So many people, so few pencils. My beautiful, mechanical pencil with the comfy finger padding and extra long eraser managed to go home with someone. I hope if finds its way back to me someday … sigh.
Anyway, enough with the passive aggressive whining. Don’t forget that our March meeting is going to be at the Panera Bread on the South side of town since downtown will be busy with the True/Falase film festival.

Izzy’s 50 States Jam found its way into Vox Magazine this week. In the article, JB Winter talks about how he came up with the idea for the jam and what it was like working with 49 other artists. Go give it a read and then get your copy of the comic at Get Lost Bookshop, MU Bookstore and Rock Bottom Comics.

Some more information about Mizzou’s New Student Center has been posted on Mizzou Wire with some details on how our favorite local cartoon celebrity is going to fit into the picture. You won’t see much of Beetle Baily when phase 1 is finished on Jan. 5. It won’t be until the end of phase 2 where he’ll make a showing. Here’s a few bits pulled from the story:
Mort’s: Named for MU alumnus Mort Walker (BA ’48), creator of the Beetle Bailey comic, this games-and-grill area will offer sandwiches and appetizers during and after late-night events at The Shack. Demand for late-night dining options on campus spurred its creation.
Beetle Bailey as a Mizzou student: While at school, Mort Walker served as editor of and contributor to a student humor magazine called the ShowMe, whose staff meetings often were held in the spacious booths of the original Shack. Upon graduating, Walker went to New York City to pursue a career as a cartoonist. Although Beetle wasn’t born on campus, Walker said he did have The Shack in mind while developing the character who became Beetle Bailey. Walker offered to create original artwork for the center that features Beetle as a Mizzou student.

According to the Dec. City Source newsletter, the Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) is implementing a new program to paint traffic signal boxes in the downtown area. The idea is to build on the success of the box on 9th st. painted by David Spear.
If you’re interested in getting involved, don’t go to the OCA’s Web site because it’s lame and has nothing to tell you. Instead, send your contact information the old-fashioned way to oca@gocolumbiamo.com or call 573-874-6386.

Everyone who attended the 24 Hour Comics Day event this year got a special treat from J.B. Winter who created a 24-tortilla comic which he turned into 12 quesadillas.
For those who didn’t make the event, Winter has outlined his process of creating the edible art on his blog. You can read the whole comic, in this photo gallery.

For the November meeting, Midmococo created some thank you card jams for our generous sponsors for the 24 Hour Comics Day event. Thanks again to the Columbia Art League for letting us use their classroom space and thanks to Nick-N-Willy’s Pizza for the cheap food!

24 Hour Comics Day 2008 was a huge success. We had a record turnout of 16 participants and most stayed the entire 24 hours. Thanks to everyone who came and made the event so much fun.
I also want to take a moment to thank our sponsors! Thanks to the Columbia Art League for letting us use their classroom space and thanks to Nick-N-Willy’s Pizza for the cheap food. 24 Hour Comics Day wouldn’t have been possible without their support.
As a follow-up, I’ve linked to all the publicity, comics and photos I could find from the event. I’ve also included Vimeo and YouTube links to some video interviews. I wish I could have gotten everyone interviewed, but I wanted to draw some comics myself! If you’ve got something to add, let me know and I’ll include it too.

Our next Midmococo featured creator is J.B. Winter who recently self-published Izzy Challenge #5, an ambitious comic jam with contributions from fifty artists from every state in the US. You can see samples from the book and order your own copy for a buck at his store.
What are you working on now comics-wise?
I’ve just finished up the 50 States Jam, and I’m still promoting that a bit at the moment. After that I need to pick up a story I’ve abandoned for a while and see if I can fit it into Noodle #3. Read the rest of this entry »

Don’t forget that 24 Hour Comics Day is this weekend and Midmococo is hosting an official location at the Columbia Art League. There’s still space to sign up, so check out our event page for more information. Tell your friends! Update: The event is over. Thanks to all who participated!
The event starts at 12 p.m., but you’re going to want to show up a half hour early to get set up.
There’s been a new sponsor added. Nick-N-Willy’s Pizza is giving us 50% off our dinner order, so think about the kind of pizza you want. Don’t forget to bring some change so we can split the bill easily.
Also, I’ve documented how I made the silkscreen posters for the event over on my blog.
Get lots of rest and I’ll see you Saturday.

Opey still can’t get no respect and now he’s got a crush on the new girl who thinks he’s a dork. What’s a pre-pubesent, antisocial, nuclear warhead, in a post-apocalyptic world to do? Find out in issue 3 of Opey the Warhead.
In more Opey news, Zac Crockett talks of putting together a collection of issues 1-3 with an extra story that never made its way online. That is, if there’s enough interest. Do yourself, and everyone else, a favor and leave a comment telling him to print the damn thing!
Opey deserves to be in print. We eagerly await issue 4.

We had a huge turnout for the October meeting. It was so big we had to split up into two groups. It was cool meeting all the new people and I hope they stick around.
Since everybody was busy socializing and learning about the 24 Hour Comic event, we didn’t get very many jams drawn. The ones we did draw are full of obscure jokes and characters. Have fun looking them up on Wikipedia! Thanks goes to Winter for scanning them in for me.

There’s another big release this week with J.B. Winter’s latest epic jam: Izzy Challenge #5.
This book uses contributions from 50 artists from 50 different states to create a collaborative jam featuring Izzy the Mouse. The idea is that Izzy’s touring America and in each of the 50 panels Izzy visits a different state.
The list of contributors is impressive, so head on over to his Etsy store and order a copy. It’s not online, but it’s only a buck. You can afford a buck, right?

One year ago today the Midmococo blog launched and over the past twelve months it has reported on mid-Missouri comic events, creators, comic jams, local comic history and other comic-related things. Here’s some quick blog stats on our first 111 posts:
It’s been a great first year and I have a feeling that the next one will be stuffed full of comic-related goodies. Stay tuned.

This jam almost didn’t get done because only a few folks showed up to this month’s meeting. Yes, you should be disappointed in yourselves for not coming. Yes, this is a total guilt trip I’m laying on. We had a few new comic enthusiasts show up only to find us a pitiful few. I’m sure they mock us. To make up for it, you must bring 10 new drawings to the next meeting or the hot dog monster will get you.

What are you working on now comics-wise?
Not a whole lot at the moment. My online comic, if then else, has been on hiatus for a little over a year while the ending’s being worked out. Once the basic outline and first two storylines are written (and at least 100 pizzas have been consumed during the process), the comic will return.
In the meantime, there’s a lot of sketching going on. I really ought to start a sketch blog one of these days.
How’s your comic output been the last year? What’s helped or hindered your output?
Output has been fairly low. A few comics were contributed to the Evil Overlords United; however, my online persona’s involvement was the primary reason. The main hinderence right now is motivation – my free time has been devoted to other activities recently. That and artist’s block. You know, the vicious, unfeeling, nine-eyed creature that lurks at the back of one’s imagination waiting intently for an innocent idea to devour. Does anyone have the number of a good exterminator?
Read any good comics/graphic novels lately?
