Another 24 Hour Comics Day Event is completed! We had a solid turnout of participants and had a few visitors during our event. Thanks to everyone who came out and thanks again to Lisa Bartlett and Artlandish Gallery for once again hosting the event! Remember, please feel free to email your links to your projects and we will post them on the site later this week. Thanks!

We are almost 24 hours away from start time of 24 Hour Comics Day! I will be at Artlandish Gallery from 4-5 today to set-up; if you want to preview the layout of the area we will be in you’re more than welcome to come and help out during that time. I will also be there at 11:00 tomorrow to make sure everything is in order. It is highly recommended you arrive early to get situated before the 12:00 start time. You can still participate if you arrive after 12 but it will hurt your chances of completing a full 24 page comic. It is supposed to be rather chilly tomorrow so please dress comfortably. Right now we’ve got 10 participants confirmed. There’s still time to email me at testtubecomics@yahoo.com if you want to guarantee a spot, but we should have plenty of space for everyone. There will be some local media covering the event as well.
Looking forward to another successful 24 Hour Comics Day Event!

We are only 5 days away from 24 Hour Comics Day! Again, please email me beforehand if you want to guarantee a spot at the event this year. If you have any tables or chairs you’d like to contribute to the event please be at Artlandish Gallery between 4-5 this Friday so we can set up. Thanks, and hope to see you all there!

We’ve already had 8 participants reserve their spots at the 24 Hour Comics Day event at Artlandish on October 2nd. Again, please remember that the only way to guarantee yourself a spot is by making a reservation via email to testtubecomics@yahoo.com. Otherwise it will be first come/first served for anyone who comes the day of the event.
Here’s the specifics about our 24 Hour Comics Day: It is recommended to arrive at least 20-30 minutes before the event in order to set up your space and get settled in. We will provide space, seating and some refreshments. You must bring your own supplies and anything else you feel you will need. We usually have non-participant volunteers to make a dinner run, which is usually determined by everyone at the event (please bring some cash if you plan on pitching in to make it easier on our runners), and last year Ernie’s made for an ideal spot to have breakfast and get away from staring at the art for a while. You do have the option to fend for yourself if you prefer to dine alone, but it’s always more fun to eat with the group.
It is recommended to bring healthy snacks to the event. Overdosing in sugary stuff can hurt your chances at completing the project. It is also recommended to get a full night sleep and eat a big lunch/brunch before the event so you have plenty of energy the day of.
I will be setting up Friday, October 1st, and would greatly appreciate any assistance. Please email me if you can help out. There is also a Facebook event page created; if you are on Facebook and would like to be invited please let me know. On the other end if you’ve confirmed you will attend the event on Facebook but haven’t emailed me at testtubecomics@yahoo.com please do so I can have all my bases covered.
I am really looking forward to our 5th consecutive year of participating in the 24 Hour Comics Day event and am hoping we can maximize the amount of people participating this year! Ideally I would like everyone starting out at noon Saturday to be there at noon Sunday, even if they have to leave for a few hours or early that night, for a proposed “Caffeine Toast” at the end of the event to celebrate everyone’s accomplishment. I’m sure will talk more about it the day of but I wanted to throw that out there now.
Looking forward to seeing everyone there! Again, PLEASE reserve your spot if you want a guaranteed seat!

First, thanks to Josh for getting the follow-up post in a timely manner. I was completely wiped after the weekend and was unable to do anything half-way coherent for a while. Big thanks to everyone for making it out this weekend and making this yet another successful event! We would like to post everyone’s stories on the blog so please send us a link when you get a chance!
Also also, if you get a chance be sure to let Lisa Bartlett at Artlandish know how much we appreciated her letting us use the space this year! Thanks again and hurry up and get those stories in!

Just a quick update: I will be at Artlandish today from 4:30-5:30 getting things set up. If you have tables and chairs to bring or if you just want to help set up and can make it during this time please feel free to stop by. I did not receive any artwork from anyone via email so I am assuming we will not be hanging up any art this year (maybe next time!)
Checking the total tally of artists who have preregistered and it looks like I was off by one: We currently have 15 artists registered for the event. If you do not email me before tonight you CAN still participate in 24 Hour Comics day with us, but we cannot guarantee you a seat at a table, at least for the first part. I think we can squeeze in a couple more people at tables but I won’t be sure until after set up tonight.
Again, please try to be at Artlandish tomorrow by 11:30 at the latest. I will be there at 11:00 for last minute set-up and to get everything ready. It looks like this year will be a good mix of both familiar faces from previous 24 Hour Comics Days as well as some new ones. The event will be open to the public for a portion of the day Saturday and Sunday, so keep that in mind when picking your spot to work.
I hope everyone is as excited as I am about this year’s event! See you all tomorrow!

Quick update on 24 Hour Comics Day this Saturday: So far we have 16 comic book creators who have sent email
commitments for the event. Again, if you want to guarantee yourself a seat shoot me an email at testtubecomics@yahoo.com. We’ll squeeze in anyone who shows up, they just might have to settle for a spot on the floor until someone else leaves their spot at a table. Speaking of which, we do have quite a few tables being brought in by various people but we could always use a couple more just to be safe. I’ll be at Artlandish from 4:30 to about 5:30 getting somethings set up, any help would be greatly appreciated. If you have any artwork from previous events that you would like displayed either bring it by then or email me a copy and I will try to get it hung up.
Please try to be at the event by 11:30 at the latest so you can get settled in and acquainted with your area. We will start right at noon. Suggested items to bring would be healthy snacks such as fruit and granola bars. Try to avoid caffeine for as long as possible as it will cause you to tire out sooner than later. Try to pace yourself to one page an hour if you’re aiming for the whole 24 pages; skipping pencils and going straight to inking can help sometimes. Other tips can be found at the official 24 hour comics website.
We’ll probably figure out dinner the night of the event. With so many local restaurants around us we’ll have a variety to chose from. Breakfast Sunday will most likely be at Ernie’s as it is right down the street (it’s pretty affordable and they have great coffee!).
I am very excited about the event this year and I hope you all are as well. Looking forward to seeing you all Saturday!

Our meeting at Artlandish last weekend went really well. Everyone seems really excited about the event this year! We do have about 12-13 confirmed participants this year. Again, please email me at testtubecomics@yahoo.com to guarantee yourself a spot at a table. If you don’t send an email you can still participate, you just might have to settle for a spot on the floor until a table seat opens up.
We seem to have enough volunteers to bring power strips and even a small fridge, and the bar stools that were there when we walked through the space will still be there. The main thing we need right now are tables. If you or someone you know has a folding or card table that they are able to bring, please let us know!
Set up for the event will be Friday, October 2nd. I will update with a specific time when we get closer to the event. Looking forward to having another eventful 24 Hour Comics Day in Columbia!

I am pleased to announce that we officially have a location for 24 Hour Comics Day 2009: Artlandish Gallery! Located on 1019 E. Walnut right next to Rock Bottom Comics, Artlandish Gallery’s Lisa Bartlett has agreed to sponsor our event this year on October 3rd. This is our 4th consecutive year officially participating in the event and we are hoping to make this our most successful one yet!
We are planning on having an informational meeting at Artlandish Gallery on September 12th (time to be announced) so everyone can have the opportunity to see the space. If you are interested in participating this year I would highly recommend attending so you can get a feel for what we are planning.
We are also accepting registration for 24 Hour Comics Day. Contact me at testtubecomics@yahoo.com. Registration is the only way to guarantee yourself a seat at Artlandish. You don’t have to register to participate but you may find yourself sitting on the floor. Also, if you want to volunteer to help out in any way please feel free to contace me. Get your sleep in now!

Kansas City’s largest pop culture and comic book convention is coming up soon! Some of our members, myself included, are planning on getting tables in Artist’s Alley this year and it was proposed at our last meeting that we should try to sit together and chip in to create a MidMoCoCo banner for the group. I am awaiting a response from Chris Jackson about the likelihood of making that happen but in the meantime I would encourage anyone who is interested to either contact me or go ahead and submit an application to Artist’s Alley. There is a section on the application to request sitting next to someone. You can put either my name or Midmococo in that section. Hopefully we can make a presence at this year’s convention. Even if you do not plan on getting a table at the convention I would highly encourage attending. It’s a fun show with lots of big names, including Matt Fraction, Phil Hester, Ande Parks, Michael Golden, Chris Samnee and Tony Moore. We could even have a Midmococo get together that Saturday night!
We will probably discuss this more at the March meeting. For more information about the convention itself visit the official website at www.planetcomicon.com.
UPDATE: Chris Jackson has said that we will be able to group together in Artist’s Alley. Just be sure to mention “Midmococo” on your application.

The Isotope Award for Mini-Comic Exellence is now accepting submissions for it’s 2008 entry! Coinciding on the same weekend as the Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco, the award spotlights one mini-comic creator out of the thousands of entries received and has helped launch the careers of notable creators such as Josh Cotter (Skyscrapers of the Midwest), Danica Novgorodoff (Slow Storm), Rob Osborne (1000 Steps To World Domination), Daniel Merlin Goodbrey (The Last Sane Cowboy) and Max Riffner (Quick Step). It is a great opportunity to be noticed by some of your mini-comics peers so I highly encourage anyone who has a mini-comic out there to enter! Submissions are being accepted until midnight, October 24th. For more details visit the Isotope post right here.

Planet Comicon is coming up in a couple weeks and I am going to have a table in Artist’s Alley. I would like to extend an invitation to any local creators who would like to have their books sold or given away at my table, I should have plenty of space. Just shoot me an email at testtubecomics@yahoo.com if interested. I would also encourage anyone who has April 5th and 6th free to go to the convention. Planet Comicon is a little more intimate than some of your bigger cons and they get some really great guests to attend, which makes it really worthwhile. Hope to see you there!
Update: Kirstin has a con report up on her blog, and she also did a podcast interviewing people at the con.

Update: Because of freezing rain and ice, the Pitchers and Pitchers event has been canceled. We are planning a reschedule, so check back later.
Midmococo’s second Pictures and Pitchers event has been decided! We are going to meet at Gumby’s Pizza Saturday, December 8th, at 7:00. Bring your pencils, your pens, your paper, your appetite and your thirst! Just like last year, this is an excuse to get together with you fellow mid-Missouri comic creators and enjoy working on your art while sharing a tasty beverage. For directions or more information please contact us. Hope to see you there!

Once again 24 hour comics day was a success, not only in terms of participation and experience but also in gaining attention from the local media. The Columbia Missourian came by after the event to interview the last creators standing, including Kelly, Keith and Kirsten. You can read the story at the Missourian’s Web site.
We also had television coverage from KOMU for the first time. It was a short segment but it managed to get really good clips of almost everyone who was present at the event. Watch the clip with KOMU on Demand.
I am extra happy with the coverage we received this year as it will hopefully garner more interest in the comic book community that we have here in Columbia. Again, I’d like to thank Boen and Steve at Quinlan Keep for hosting the 24 Hour Comic Event. I was extremely happy with the attendance and level of enthusiasm everyone had. It’s always a pleasure to be in the same room with such talented people, and it always inspires me afterwards to get my butt in gear and get some more work done. I really hope it has done the same for all of you. It seems like we may have some new Midmococo regulars after this event, and that, in my opinion, makes this year’s 24 Hour Comics day the biggest success of all.
Thanks again to everyone who showed up, and I hope to see you all at one of our meetings really soon!

I stopped by Quinlan Keep and Boen’s dad had a couple of names of people also interested in participating in the event this year, so it sounds like we’re going to have the same turnout as last year, if not better! I’m really excited about that. I did want to give you all a heads up to make sure everyone gets there at about 11:00-11:30 to make sure we can get the seating set-up all situated before the event begins.
Also, Kristin finished the flyer for the event and it looks great. I will be going around downtown during my lunchbreak to put them up wherever I can. I will mainly concentrate on getting them up around downtown and then later putting them up around Mizzou. If anyone can think of anywhere else to post them or would like to help out please let me know as I have the master copy with me and can make extra copies.
Looks like this is going to be another solid event for us! Looking forward to seeing you all there!
