November jams: 24 Hour Comics Day thank yous

Posted by on November 4, 2008

For the November meeting, Midmococo created some thank you card jams for our generous sponsors for the 24 Hour Comics Day event. Thanks again to the Columbia Art League for letting us use their classroom space and thanks to Nick-N-Willy’s Pizza for the cheap food!

24 Hour Comics Day followup

Posted by on October 31, 2008

24 Hour Comics Day 2008 was a huge success. We had a record turnout of 16 participants and most stayed the entire 24 hours. Thanks to everyone who came and made the event so much fun.

I also want to take a moment to thank our sponsors! Thanks to the Columbia Art League for letting us use their classroom space and thanks to Nick-N-Willy’s Pizza for the cheap food. 24 Hour Comics Day wouldn’t have been possible without their support.

As a follow-up, I’ve linked to all the publicity, comics and photos I could find from the event. I’ve also included Vimeo and YouTube links to some video interviews. I wish I could have gotten everyone interviewed, but I wanted to draw some comics myself! If you’ve got something to add, let me know and I’ll include it too.

24 Hour Comics Day this Saturday

Posted by on October 16, 2008

Don’t forget that 24 Hour Comics Day is this weekend and Midmococo is hosting an official location at the Columbia Art League. There’s still space to sign up, so check out our event page for more information. Tell your friends! Update: The event is over. Thanks to all who participated!

The event starts at 12 p.m., but you’re going to want to show up a half hour early to get set up.

There’s been a new sponsor added. Nick-N-Willy’s Pizza is giving us 50% off our dinner order, so think about the kind of pizza you want. Don’t forget to bring some change so we can split the bill easily.

Also, I’ve documented how I made the silkscreen posters for the event over on my blog.

Get lots of rest and I’ll see you Saturday.

Chan creates annotated comic

Posted by on November 11, 2007

Annotations!

Local creator Keith Chan has done something interesting … He’s annotated his 24 hour comic that he created at the 24 hour event in October. You can read about the idea behind the annotations, and then you can jump right in and view the annotated comic. (You can turn the annotations off and on at the bottom of the page if you want.)

Here are some links to the comics that were done at the 24 hour comics day event held at Quinlan Keep in Columbia, Missouri. We’ll try to add more links as people get their things scanned online.

Post 24 Hour Comics Day coverage

Posted by on October 22, 2007

24 Hour Comic Day logoOnce again 24 hour comics day was a success, not only in terms of participation and experience but also in gaining attention from the local media. The Columbia Missourian came by after the event to interview the last creators standing, including Kelly, Keith and Kirsten. You can read the story at the Missourian’s Web site.

We also had television coverage from KOMU for the first time. It was a short segment but it managed to get really good clips of almost everyone who was present at the event. Watch the clip with KOMU on Demand.

I am extra happy with the coverage we received this year as it will hopefully garner more interest in the comic book community that we have here in Columbia. Again, I’d like to thank Boen and Steve at Quinlan Keep for hosting the 24 Hour Comic Event. I was extremely happy with the attendance and level of enthusiasm everyone had. It’s always a pleasure to be in the same room with such talented people, and it always inspires me afterwards to get my butt in gear and get some more work done. I really hope it has done the same for all of you. It seems like we may have some new Midmococo regulars after this event, and that, in my opinion, makes this year’s 24 Hour Comics day the biggest success of all.

Thanks again to everyone who showed up, and I hope to see you all at one of our meetings really soon!

24 Hour Comics Day was a success!

Posted by on October 21, 2007

Thanks to everyone who made 24 Hour Comics Day a success. Thanks goes out to Quinlan Keep for hosing the event. We appreciate it! We had a great time and a lot of awesome work was created. We’ll link to some of the comics once they have been scanned. Until then, you can check out some photos of the event in the slide show below.

24 Hour Comics Day tips

Posted by on October 19, 2007

24 Hour Comic Day blog

Hey everyone, one of the Minnesota guys sent me a link to their 24 hour blog that they’ll be rocking tomorrow, and it has some cool tips on it already from Kevin Cannon.

In particular I like these 4:

  • Wait until you get home to erase.
  • Try doing a page every fifty minutes. That gives you 240 minutes to rest and recoup and eat.
  • Do as little penciling as possible. Nobody’s going to win an Eisner with these books, so why not jump into the inks right away?
  • Put padding on your drawing tool. I bought some colorful elementary school foam pencil holders at OfficeMax. (After last year, my fingers went numb too, so I’m definitely trying this!)

24 Hour Comics Day is almost here

Posted by on October 18, 2007

I stopped by Quinlan Keep and Boen’s dad had a couple of names of people also interested in participating in the event this year, so it sounds like we’re going to have the same turnout as last year, if not better! I’m really excited about that. I did want to give you all a heads up to make sure everyone gets there at about 11:00-11:30 to make sure we can get the seating set-up all situated before the event begins.

Also, Kristin finished the flyer for the event and it looks great. I will be going around downtown during my lunchbreak to put them up wherever I can. I will mainly concentrate on getting them up around downtown and then later putting them up around Mizzou. If anyone can think of anywhere else to post them or would like to help out please let me know as I have the master copy with me and can make extra copies.

Looks like this is going to be another solid event for us! Looking forward to seeing you all there!
